October 20, 2016

The Faculty Senate was called to order by A.G. Rud, Chair on Thursday October 20, 2016, in FSHN T101 at 3:30 p.m. thirty-three (33) members were present with twenty (20) absent and eight (8) nonvoting members present.


Minutes of October 6, 2016 meeting were approved as circulated.

      1. Graduate Studies Committee has approved bylaw updates to the Engineering and Technology Management Program and they are available on the department’s website

      1. The Executive Committee attended an Association for Faculty Women luncheon to provide an overview of Senate procedures.
      2. I attended the WSU Republicans Trump Wall demonstration and was pleased to report that the political debate was civil on both sides.
      3. I attended the announcement of the preliminary accreditation on the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine.

  6. Constituents’ Concerns.
    1. GPSA President, Melanie Thornton brought a concern to the Faculty Senate regarding the impact on graduate students affected by the Affordable Care Act. Under this legislation, it is now illegal for higher education institutions to provide subsidized health care. This may affect recruiting efforts. President Schulz will be traveling to Washington DC to discuss this impact on higher education institutions.
    2. A concern was raised regarding the cost of textbooks. There is interest in open source texts, but that raises the concern that the instructor’s control of curriculum taught will be eroded which can negatively affect the quality of students’ education. This matter will be discussed with the President at the next meeting. It was also noted that the library system has open access resources available.
