Faculty Senate Candidate B

Professor Charles Moore

WSU Pullman

I currently serve as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics – a position I have held since my arrival at WSU just over a decade ago. In addition to my service as chair of a large, complex department, at WSU I have served on Faculty Senate since 2021, the Faculty Senate Budget Committee this past year, the CAS Undergraduate Advisory Committee, the CAS Assessment Committee, the Global Campus Academic Council, and the OER working group.

At my previous institution, Kansas State University, I was a Faculty Senator, and was a member and chair of their Faculty Senate’s Committee on Faculty Salaries and Fringe Benefits. I have served, often as chair, on dozens of other committees at the department, college, and university levels, as well as on committees for my professional organizations. At KSU I was active in AAUP: I served six years on the Executive Board, and I was the delegate from Kansas to the national convention for five years. I’m still a member of AAUP and support their unwavering dedication to the vision of a university that is strong through its accountability, transparency, and equity.

My experiences with all levels of the university have given me a variety of perspectives of the structure, procedures, and policies of public land grant institutions and have further reinforced my commitment to shared governance. I would love to bring my leadership skills and experience to our Faculty Senate.

WSU faces many problems: declining enrollments, budget reductions, low salaries, and increasing workloads. Yet, the quality of our faculty and staff remains high. We deserve better. We need faculty actively involved in tackling these issues and ensuring that the university thrives. We need more faculty serving on higher level committees, and more faculty interested in serving at all levels.

Through Faculty Senate we can communicate our concerns and ideas to higher administration and those making decisions that determine our future. I would encourage faculty to participate in Faculty Senate and be involved in its committees. I want to see an energetic and vital Senate that is willing to be an active partner in building the university’s future. Faculty Senate provides a way for us to have a seat at the table and be heard.
