Regular Meeting
November 19, 2015
The Faculty Senate was called to order by Richard Zack, Chair on Thursday November 19, 2015, in FSHN T101 at 3:30p.m. thirty-three (33) members were present with thirteen (13) absent and seven (7) nonvoting members present.
Minutes of October 22, 2015 meeting were approved as circulated.

- Graduate Studies Committee has approved bylaw updates to the Physics Department which are available on the department’s website

- I visited the Vancouver campus and met with constituents.
- The Faculty Senate officers responded to a constituent concern noting that votes via email are allowable according to Roberts Rules of Order.
- If Senators currently serving in the Senate have questions about who their constituents are, please contact the Dean’s office in their college for assistance.

- Three areas of concern were discussed. 1) Fostering a multicultural community; 2) General Safety trainings and procedures specific to each classroom for situations that could involve a hostile intruder and/or bomb threats; 3) Providing adequate help regarding mental health concerns for students/staff

- Discussion: Admission’s staff were consulted regarding transferring credits on military personnel and no issues/concerns were posed. Motion to move this to an action item and become effective January 1, 2016

- Discussion: Concerns with the Global Studies Minor, it was requested that some English courses in that minor be included. AAC will pull the Global Studies Minor to review.

- Recommendation from the Provost’s Office and the Steering Committee to approve Guidelines for establishing a suggest 30 day responds to committee requests (Exhibit U)
- Discussion: Wording and clarification was requested regarding the intent of the guidelines.
- Recommendation from the Steering Committee to Create a School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in Tri-Cities (Exhibits V V1)
- Discussion: There was confusion on how the degrees were listed and that Chemical Engineering was not listed in the proposal. It was noted Chemical Engineering would be a separate program. Additional questions arose on whether or not the School was already in place on the Tri-Cities campus. Executive Officers will follow up.
- Recommendation from the Steering Committee to approve amending the Faculty Senate Bylaws to include the College of Medicine (Exhibit W)
- Discussion: This change will result in there being additional Senators

- A concern was voiced on wording clarification of the Senate agenda.
