November 17, 2016

The Faculty Senate was called to order by A.G. Rud, Chair on Thursday November 17, 2016, in FSHN T101 at 3:30 p.m. thirty-seven (37) members were present with sixteen (16) absent and six (6) nonvoting members present.

Minutes of November 3, 2016 meeting were approved as circulated.

  1. Announcements (Information items).
    1. Information Items.
      1. Minor Change Bulletin #4 (Exhibit B)
      2. Steering Committee and Faculty Affairs Committee have approved the Notice of Intent in accordance with the MOU guidelines to approve the Nutrition and Exercise Physiology (NEP) Program (Exhibit D)
      3. Steering Committee and Faculty Affairs Committee have approved the Notice of Intent in accordance with the MOU guidelines to approve the Three New Departments in the Murrow College of Communication (Exhibit E )
  2. Announcements (Reports).
    1. Remarks by AG Rud
      1. A special meeting will be held on December 1, 2016, 3:30-5:-00pm in FSHN T101 regarding the INTRO program. Provost Bernardo, Dr. Asif Chaudhry and Dr. Craig Parks will be present to discuss and answer questions.
      2. Nominations for Chair-Elect and Executive Secretary are open. Please email the nomination to Sheila Converse

    1. Motion to add a statement to the Action Items.
      1. Motion made, seconded and passed to have a statement affirming the faculty’s commitment to a welcoming, diverse environment become an action item on today’s agenda.

    4. Recommendation that the Senate make the following statement. “Washington State University reaffirms its commitment to cultivating “individual and institutional integrity in all that we do”; to maintaining “an inclusive workplace” that values our differences and ensures “equitable opportunities.” We advocate “trust and respect for all persons” regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, or sexual identity; prohibit
      discrimination against the disabled; and seek to maintain “an inclusive campus culture for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff in all our locations.” We call on the university to declare itself a “sanctuary center of higher education” committed to protecting the members of its community from unfair deportation, investigation, or other intimidation. “

    3. Recommendation from the Graduate Studies Committee to approve Graduate Major Change Bulletin #5 ( Exhibit H ) – T. Chauvin/T. Salsbury

    4. Motion made to split the statement and make the first portion an action item today.       1. Motion made, seconded and passed to table (postpone) second statement until January meeting where it will be a discussion item. The Senate asks that the AG’s office be consulted before that time and the questions raised about where this statement will be publicized, by whom and how will be answered.
      2. Motion made, seconded and passed to replace the first statement with a statement affirming that the members of the Faculty Senate support the statement published by President Schulz on November 14. AG Rud and Judi McDonald will craft a statement to send to WSU News and to post on the Faculty Senate Home page.
  6. Constituents’ Concerns.
    1. A question asked why the departments must purchase “Service Permits” and could a number of free permits be given to each department for departmental business if a permit was not originally purchased? The Chair will follow up with John Shaheen, Director of Parking.
  7. Adjournment.
