Washington State University Faculty Senate 2020-2021 Elections

The Faculty Senate of Washington State University is currently seeking nominations for the position of Chair-Elect.  The Faculty Senate represents all campuses to the WSU administration and eligible faculty are encouraged to run.

Eligibility to run for Chair-Elect:

  • Section 1 C of the Senate Constitution: The chair-elect of the Faculty Senate shall be elected by the membership of the Faculty Senate from among those individuals who are currently a senator, parliamentarian, or a member of the Steering Committee or have served in one of these positions within the previous four years. The chair-elect shall assume the duties of the chair in the absence of the chair.

*I.e., both continuing Senators and those whose terms are expiring are eligible for election.

  • Section III #4 of Senate Bylaws: All elections of officers shall take place by a majority of those present and voting. If no candidate secures a majority, a run-off election shall be conducted between the two candidates with the highest number of votes.

Eligibility to run for Executive Secretary:

  • The Executive Secretary shall be a member of the faculty eligible for election to the Senate, and shall be selected by the Senate for a three-year term and shall be eligible for reelection. If the person chosen is an elected member of the Senate, the seat thereby becomes vacant and shall be filled as specified in Article II, Section 7.C. 1.

Election Calendar

Feb 18 (Tuesday) – Please use the form below to submit nominations for the position of Chair-Elect and Executive Secretary.  Please submit nominations no later than 5:00 pm on February 18th, 2020.

Feb 20 (Thursday) – candidates announced to Senate

Feb 26  (Monday) – ballots sent to all senators

Mar 24 (Thursday) – ballots due

Mar 25 (Wednesday) – ballots counted by Executive Secretary and Parliamentarian and ASWSU President or representative

Mar 26 (Thursday) – Chair-Elect and Executive Secretary announced

Mar 27 (Friday) – If no clear majority, a second ballot will be distributed with the names of the top 2 candidates in accordance with the Senate Bylaws.

Apr 7 (Tuesday) – Second round of ballots due by 5 PM

Apr 9 (Thursday) – Chair-Elect  and Executive Secretary announced

Financial Support

The Provost provides financial support to help offset the workload of faculty senate leadership.  At this time, the Chair-Elect, Chair, and Executive Secretary receive support in the form of buy-outs and other compensation that is negotiated with the faculty member’s chair or director and dean.  The following link details those funding mechanisms.
