Dear Faculty Colleagues,

After an extensive series of pilot tests sponsored by WSU Faculty Senate, Academic Outreach and Innovation, and Information Technology Services, WSU will move fully to the Canvas LMS beginning Fall 2021. Moving from Blackboard to Canvas addresses the known issues faculty have raised over the years—a full list of these issues is here:

https://confluence.esg.wsu.edu/display/KB/Blackboard+-+Known+Issues

Most of these issues relate to Blackboard’s inability to integrate with our Student Information System, which is not a limitation in Canvas. For example, faculty can now send final grades from Canvas to myWSU without going through a download/upload process.  Many more improvements requested by faculty will be rolling out in the next few months.

Our contract with Blackboard will end on August 21, 2021.  The most recent and intensive phase of the faculty-led pilot test culminated in about 25% of all spring 2021 courses previously on Blackboard seamlessly migrating to Canvas.  Building on this success and to facilitate the full Canvas rollout, we ask that you consider your upcoming summer and fall courses and, as soon as possible, work with Academic Outreach and Innovation (AOI) to begin your migration process from Blackboard to Canvas.  Please contact migrationhelp@wsu.edu to start moving existing Blackboard content to Canvas well in advance of the contract end date.

New Canvas courses are created in myWSU. Please contact your department course scheduler or campus course scheduler to create a Canvas course for Summer 2021 or Fall 2021.

If you want to test drive Canvas, you can create a course sandbox by following https://esg-apps.it.wsu.edu/canvas-sandbox. Courses developed in a sandbox can easily be migrated to production for future use.

Academic Outreach and Innovation has increased their capacity to assist with migrating content to Canvas and subsequent organization of content. We suggest taking AOI’s Fall 2021 preparation survey to inform the development and delivery of support initiatives.
