Nominations should be sent to Dorene Branson (branson@wsu.edu)

  2. The Senate officers met with President Floyd on April 2.

  3. Message from Senator Lee Hadwinger:
The WSU motto "because the world needs big ideas" at times may ring hollow to some, especially the Washington public that does not have the opportunity to attend sessions such as the recent Showcase. I am sure we have big ideas, but I would like to add another opportunity for faculty, staff and students to participate in generating new ideas. I ran this idea by the WSU administration and no one indicated an objection. The essence of this proposal is to have an "open mic" similar to what musicians in downtown bars enjoy. There would be a sign up sheet for anyone wanting to describe their idea in a 10 minute session on a Friday evening or Saturday morning time slot. This advertised session would be attended by others with ideas and hopefully other interested parties.  There would be a confidential sigh up sheet for those in attendance so that the ideas would not be considered as being disclosed to the public and hopefully could still be totally patentable at a later date.  WSU apparently has innovator meetings at both Spokane and Seattle, but these are likely to be more formal and not provide the relaxed open interchange from any one on the campus.  These "open mic" meetings could take the route of the lead balloon or possibly generate collaborations or discussions that could actually turn into a big idea.  There would be no expense other than the dedication of some hours by those involved.  Initially there would be no structure based on the research or invention category, but could be a categorized later by those with common interests.  I would like to briefly present what is in this email to the Senate with the hope to get honest criticisms or encouragements in relation to the proposal. The first session would likely be next fall.
