University Scholarship Coordinating Committee

Functions:

The University Scholarship Coordinating Committee (USCC) is responsible for selecting recipients of university wide merit scholarships to assist in the recruitment of the state's and nation's most talented students. The committee pays particular attention to the recruitment, retention and graduation of students from diverse multicultural populations. Specific functions of University Scholarship Coordinating Committee include:

  1. Recruit and develop Distinguished Presidential Scholars and Distinguished Multicultural Scholars representing approximately the top one percent of the entering class and comprised of diverse, exceptionally gifted and creative students with a demonstrated potential to contribute to knowledge.

  2. Recruit Presidential Scholars and Multicultural Scholars representing approximately the top ten percent of the entering class and comprised of diverse, high-quality and talented students who add to the stature of Washington State University as a comprehensive research land grant university.

  3. Recruit academically and artistically talented students who contribute to the creative and cultural breadth and depth of the university environment.

Composition and Tenure:

The USCC Committee is composed of twenty (20) voting and ten (10) non-voting members. The Committee will establish two subcommittees. One subcommittee will select the Presidential Scholars and the other subcommittee will select the Multicultural Scholars.

  1. Seventeen members of the faculty and administrative and professional personnel as follows: one from each of the eight academic colleges, each urban campus, the Honors College, Multicultural Student Services, Graduate School, ROTC, and two representatives from the Multicultural Scholars Selection Subcommittee as, recommended by the respective administrators and approved by the Provost and Executive Vice President for indefinite terms, to serve as voting members.   2. One student enrolled in the Honors College at the junior or senior level, to be nominated by the Honors College for a one-year term, to serve as a voting member. (U)

  3. Two members of the Washington State University Foundation Board of Trustees or staff of the Trustees, nominated by the Associate Vice President for University Advancement for two-year terms, to serve as voting members. (A)

  4. Dean, Honors College; Director, General Education; Assistant Director, Multicultural Student Recruitment and Community Relations; Director, Admissions; Executive Director, Development; Director, Financial Aid; Coordinator, Office of Scholarship Services, a representative of the English/Math/Honors Competition; a representative of the Visual, Performing and Literary Arts Committee; and the ASWSU President; or their designees, all non-voting.   5. Composition of the two subcommittees includes one or more members from the University Scholarship Coordinating Committee plus other academic and administrative personnel as designated below:

    (1) Presidential Scholars Selection Subcommittee: Seven members including Chair and Vice Chair of USP; Assistant Director, Honors Program, Subcommittee Chair (F); Coordinator, Office of Scholarship Services (X); Chair, Multicultural Scholars Selection Subcommittee; and Assistant Director, Multicultural Student Recruitment and Community Relations.

    (2) Multicultural Scholars Selection Subcommittee. Past Chair, USP; four Multicultural Student Counselors; four Coordinators of Recruitment and Community Relations; Coordinator, Office of Scholarship Services; and Dean, Honors Program; or their designee.

  6. Chair of the USCC will be a Dean. The term of the chairperson will be limited to two years. Appointment will follow a predetermined rotation, established by the Provost, that permits all Deans to serve.
